Posted by on Saturday, August 30 2003

SOHH.com recently interviewed Obie Trice.

How has Pac influenced you?

Pac was very influential in everything. His career, everything about him getting shot. He's influenced me. His movie roles. He was so gangsta. I love him.

What's your favorite Pac movie role?

Poetic Justice. Yeah where he was the mail boy.

When asked if rappers had to stop biggin-up 2Pac Obie replied "Yeah. Sometimes it's cool" and added jokingly "When I do it. When I say something about Pac it's cool when other people do it's not"

Jerzey Mob affiliate murdered along with a 4 year old girl; sacrifices his life to save infant
Posted by on Friday, August 29 2003

On Wednesday August 20th while on his way to visit his 5 month old baby boy, Jerzey Mob affiliate Flynn “Thud” Myers was gunned down outside a building in East Orange, New Jersey by a drive by shooting which also left four year old Naviaon Hyppolite dead. The 21 year old Myers was at the scene when the shooter opened fire from a 12 gauge shot gun in the direction of Naviaon and her 1-year-old playmate. Witnesses said that Thud jumped in the line of fire to protect the two girls. He managed to save the 1-year-old’s life and sacrificed his own to do so. Unfortunately Naviaon Hyppolite was also killed.

Black Head, a Jerzey Mob recording artist who was also at the scene was shot in the shoulder and foot, but is recovering along with the 1 year old infant Thud saved.

HitEmUp.com would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Thud’s and Naviaon’s family and friends. Flynn “Thud” Myers was a true hero and should be remembered as one. He gave his life to save another and was taken at the young age of 21, along with Naviaon who was only 4 and had her whole life ahead of her. We are deeply saddened by these senseless murders and the loss suffered.

Big Syke speaks on Tupac biters
Posted by on Thursday, August 28 2003

On the song "Down With Us" from his new compilation, Thug Law Chapter 2, Big Syke speaks on rappers who bite Tupac and give him shout outs, but never show any support for Tupac's family and friend - Thug Life and Outlawz.

"So many rappers run around say they love Pac, but you will never find them niggas on our block, ain't no love for the thug that you try to be, so when you see me ain't no reason for you to lie to me," Big Syke raps. "Niggas yelling, 'Thug Life,' but ain't down with us, niggas yelling, 'Outlaw,' but ain't down with us."

"Pac opened the door for some real niggas to come in, but the door left open, bitch niggas ran in," he continues. "From the A&R, stars and club DJs and the motherfucker, who decide what he plays."

The song also features E.D.I. and Kastro of the Outlawz and rapper Stormy. The compilation, which features the Outlawz and Thug Life, can be purchased at StreetHop.com. The first few buyers will recieve a copy autographed by Big Syke himself.

The "Tupac" Freestyle dissing Ja Rule and Irv Gotti is FAKE
Posted by Jon on Wednesday, August 27 2003

The rumor of Tupac dissing Ja Rule and Irv Gotti has seemingly gone on and on over the last few weeks.  As we reported previously, the song is NOT TUPAC.

The song sounds nothing like Tupac.  It's a song titled "Checkout My Melody" and is by Tha Realest.  The song was posted on Tha Realest's official website months ago.

It's rather funny that some DJ's are distributing the song as a "Tupac freestyle", while saying that they aren't sure who it is on the track.  Obviously "freestyles" are done live, and you'd have to know who the artist is, to know that the song was done live.  These DJ's are just another in a long line of people exploiting Pac for profit.

I'd encourage all Tupac fans to boycott the mixtapes.

New book compares Tupac and 50 Cent
Posted by on Wednesday, August 27 2003
Born Gangsta, the 50 Cent and Tupac book is one of the most anticipated biographies of the year. No artist after the death of Tupac Shakur symbolized the violence at the heart of gangster rap music more than 50 Cent.

This is the first double biography on the lives of arguably the two most controversial and misunderstood artists of the latter half of the 20th and early 21st century, 50 Cent and Tupac Shakur. This double biography parallels and contrasts the "rags to riches" story of gangster rappers, 50 Cent and Tupac Shakur and their impact on the American youth culture.

In the world of gangster rap music, authenticity is mandatory, and 50 Cent embodies thug life. Gangster rap music consumers and mainstream music fans will discover this a useful book that gives thoughtful insight into the lives of two of the richest, most influential and controversial global music artists.

The unauthorized biography reveals the "real story" behind the violent rival rap feuds and street wars between Tupac and Biggie Smalls and 50 Cent and Ja Rule. The book includes commentary and analysis of the lives, lyrics, and careers of Tupac Shakur and 50 Cent and their gangster rap music.

The book also discusses why conservative news commentators like Bill O'Reilly have criticized 50 Cent and his boss, Eminem, predicting a tragic end to their gangster music and/or lives or early retirement.

Afeni Shakur on the cover XXL
Posted by on Wednesday, August 27 2003
Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur, is on the cover of the latest issue of XXL magazine. The magazine also features an interview with her. Although no one ever has been charged for the assassination of Tupac, she believes her son's murderer is already dead.

"I think the person who killed Tupac, I think he's dead," she told XXL. "But beyond that, if I'm wrong and it's somebody else, I still believe that that person has to carry that. What I know about the criminal justice system in America is that they cannot punish him like God is going to punish him."

She revealed that she buried Tupac's ashes on her farm in Lumberton, North Carolina.

"Yesterday, which was June 16th 2003, we put Tupac's ashes in the ground after seven years, and we pray that people will allow him to be gone. I think we should let him be. He earned it."

"Tupac was never conscious from the time I saw him," she said about her son's last hours in life. "He was never conscious. I believed that he would make it through because the doctor said that even with one lung, Tupac was extremely healthy and strong, and it was entirely possible that he could recover if we could put him somewhere quiet for six months."

"We were prepared to do that," she continued. "But Tupac's organs started to shut down. Once they tried to take Tupac out of the coma, and Tupac started to fight, we believe that Tupac was not interested. Tupac died seven times and they revived him seven times, and then I asked the doctors to allow him to be. And that's what we did. We let him be."

Cornell West speaks on Tupac Shakur during Tavis Smiley Foundation Panel on Black Youth & the Media
Posted by Jon on Sunday, August 24 2003

At the Tavis Smiley Foundation Panel on Black Youth & the Media, Cornwell West speaks some great words about Tupac and inspiring to greatness.

"I met Tupac when he was 10 years old, in Reverend Daughtry church, house of the Lord Pentecostal church where I used to lecture every Wednesday where his, blessed, blessed mother Afeni would bring him, and he'd sit right on the front row and watch me run my mouth.

And you know what I told that brother? Aspire to greatness. Now greatness is different than success. I'm not telling you to be successful. A whole lot of folks successful, not too great. A whole lot of folks have public notoriety, not too great. First sign of greatness, especially as a young person, is self-respect. Self-confidence. And self-love."

Mr. West also speaks on rappers, including Tupac Shakur, in talking about choosing to think yourself, and not following the general consensus of thought.

I'd encourage everybody to watch the full video by clicking the link below.  Mr. West begins speaking on Tupac around the 51st minute.

EDI comments on vocal removals from Still I Rise

If Still I Rise came out as is, it would have been an LP featuring me, Kadafi, Fatal and Tupac.  Also, everyone's vocals were moved, removed, saved for future songs, etc."

New Scarface DVD and Box Set coming soon
Posted by on Saturday, August 23 2003

If there is one movie that has had the biggest impact on the hip-hop culture, and been seen more times by artists and fans than conventional hip-hop movies, it has to be Scarface.

The movie has become legendary, and the character of Tony Montana has become an icon. No other movie's character is referenced in more songs, or quoted in more lyrics, than that of Al Pacino's Tony "Scarface" Montana.

Now to mark the movie's 20th Anniversary, Universal is releasing a new completely remastered version of the movie in a two-disc Scarface Anniversary Edition and Scarface Deluxe Gift Set.

On the Scarface Anniversary Edition DVD there's a special feature called "The Rebirth Of Scarface," a 20 minutes long documentary featuring hip-hop artists who's lives and music have been influenced by the movie. The rappers include Scarface, who named himself after the movie, Snoop Dogg and more.

Other special features include "Deleted Scenes," "Acting Scarface," "Creating Scarface," "Scarface: The TV Version" and trailers for the film and DVD.

The Scarface Deluxe Gift Set features the Scarface Anniversary Edition, plus the original 1932 Scarface, Tony Montana's gold monogrammed money clip, and a set of rare collectible lobby cards.

Both the standard DVD and Gift Box Set hit American stores on September 30th 2003.

HitEmUp.com reviews 2Pac 4 Ever
Posted by on Wednesday, August 20 2003

In a world that is often filled with hype, and an industry that thrives off of it and image, it is refreshing to watch a product that stays true to the essence and subject it is about.

2Pac 4 Ever differs from other past biographical films because it focuses on Tupac’s life, message and work, rather than his image, media attention, legal problems and untimely death. What we are left with is an honest portrayal of a man who was often conflicted, but always honest and real to himself, no matter the consequences.

While the subject of his death is examined, instead of pointing fingers at who did it or why, the narrator, legendary rapper KRS One, blames us; the people and fans for letting it happen. Tupac is portrayed as someone before his time, an intelligent man, and a prophet we lost.

The film is presented with a sad feeling and gives the viewer a sense of mourning. Filled with interviews from people who knew him including the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopez, Mike Tyson, Tha Outlawz, Mac Mall, Big Syke, Bizzy Bone and many others. Everyone interviewed shares their feelings about Tupac, their memories of times shared, and lessons learned from the man who everyone agrees was a teacher of the people, a prophet, a leader.

The film is filled with footage of Tupac, ranging from Pac on stage at the House Of Blues, in the studio, to back stage video, to an interview filmed while he was in jail. Some of the footage is previously unseen and other is rare.

The film is well edited and well paced, but the presentation takes a back seat to the raw emotion and feeling that comes through from the feeling of loss that everyone shared, including this viewer and the fans.

This is a must buy for any Tupac fan and any hip-hop fan because Tupac really was an icon of the culture.

2Pac 4 Ever!

Immortal Technique mentions Tupac
Posted by Jon on Friday, August 15 2003

Immortal Technique mentions Tupac on the track "Obnoxious" on his album Revolutionary Vol. 2. In the second verse, he raps, "I think it's just pathetic and gay when niggas speculate what the fuck Pac would say, you dont know shit about a dead man's perspective and talking shit will get your neck bone disconnected."

This is likely in reference to Tupac being used in recent fueds, namely in the beef between Ja Rule and 50 Cent.

2PAC Nu-Mixx Klazzicz press release
Posted by on Friday, August 15 2003
Below is the press release for Death Row Presents 2PAC Nu-Mixx Klazzicz, due out October 7th 2003:

Legendary rap superstar 2PAC was larger than life, and since his tragic death in 1996 his influence--both as a hip-hop trendsetter and cultural icon--has been profound. That lasting impact, and a deep-seated respect for his late friend, led our founder and CEO Suge Knight to formulate Death Row Presents 2PAC Nu-Mixx Klazzics, a fresh album celebrating the life and music of the renowned rapper. Scheduled for an October 7th release on Death Row/Koch Records, the dynamic disc showcases 10 vintage tunes totally revamped by Death Row's celebrated production team, Tha Row Hitters...

"We decided to take Pac's best tracks and spice them up a bit," says Knight, who, as the project's executive producer, hand-picked the cuts on the collection. "In that way, we could revisit the classics while also offering something new. I think we accomplished our goal and I'm sure that, if he were alive today, Pac would love what we've done."

Exclusive remixes of songs like "2 of Amerika'z Most Wanted," "How Do U Want It" and "Hit 'Em Up" are included on the recording, with the first single, "Life Goes On," shipping to radio on September 9th. Seven years after his murder, 2PAC remains the most successful artist on the Death Row Records roster, with each of his previous albums on the label certified multi-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Interest in the hip-hop hero is also sure to increase with the upcoming November debut of Resurrection, a theatrical documentary chronicling the rapper's controversial life and premature passing. Further information on 2PAC, Death Row Presents 2PAC Nu-Mixx Klazzics and Death Row Records is available at http://www.deathrowrecords.net.

RapBasement.com is reporting that Xzibit has signed a distribution deal with Shady/Interscope for his own imprint, Open Bar Entertainment. However no official statement has been released yet.

This follows months of rumors that Xzibit himself would sign to Shady Records, and also a recent altercation that left Xzibit hit in the face with a bottle.

The attack has not slowed down Xzibit's hustle as he continues work on two new mixtapes, X-Man Vol 1 & X-Man Vol 2.

Damon Dash and Jay-Z parting ways
Posted by on Wednesday, August 13 2003
New York-based newspaper Daily News reports that long-time business partners Damon Dash and Jay-Z may be parting ways soon. Each one of them owns a third of the Roc-A-Fella empire, which includes record label Roc-A-Fella Records, clothing line Roc-A-Wear and vodka company Armadale. The last third of the empire is owned by Kareem "Biggs" Burke.

"Damon wants to be a baby Puffy," a source told the newspaper. He's spending aimlessly on the company. He signed ODB against Jay-Z's consent. Jay has had enough. This has been brewing for years. Jay is reserved and cool. Damon is flashy. He's had liposuction twice."
