50 Cent Disses Ja Rule On Tupac Joint; New Biggie Material On The Horizon
Posted by Jon on Friday, March 28 2003
The following article is from MTV:

Perhaps it should be no surprise in the fast and furious mixtape market, but a long-awaited track combining the vocals of Tupac Shakur and 50 Cent has leaked to the streets early, DJ Whoo Kid said Thursday.

"The Realest Killas," a dream collaboration concocted by DJ Whoo Kid and Daz Dillinger, features Snoop Dogg on the intro, telling everyone to say "yes to drugs and f--- the police." Snoop goes on to tell Whoo Kid: "The streets ain't ready for this/ This is heav-eee, maaan/ This is heav-eee!"

Then Tupac's words from Scarface's "Smile" come in, and the slain icon warns, "There's gon' be some stuff you gon' see that's gon' make it hard to smile in the future."

An adamant 50 Cent follows Pac, chastising Ja Rule for shaving his head bald, getting tattooed and wearing bandannas. He claims the Rule's actions mimic Tupac's. "Here's the real Tupac," 50 continues.

Pac's verse is like his vintage street-soldier narratives, and he rhymes such lines as "Since my life is based on sinnin', I'm hell-bound ... / I'd rather be buried than worried," over a drum-and-chime-filled beat that appears tailor-made for a battlefield.

"Till Makaveli returns, it's all eyes on me," 50 sings on the chorus, in a cadence reminiscent of Pac's hook for "All Eyez on Me." "I thought I told you before — don't f--- with me."

50's next verse is dedicated to Ja, as the Southside Queens native again accuses the Hollis, Queens, rapper of being a Tupac wannabe. "You pretended to be Pac, you pretended to be hot," he says.

In New York on Wednesday night, Miami producer Red Spyda, who made the beat for the track, recalled how the song came together. "We was in [the studio] in Miami and 50 was eating chicken. He heard the beat [and] when he heard Tupac's part, he dropped his fork and was like, 'Is the mic on?' and went right in."

Spyda, who also produced the beat for the 50 Cent/Notorious B.I.G. collabo, "The Realest," said that he and Whoo Kid lobbied to get the song officially released but ran up against opposition from Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur.

"We tried to do a deal, but a lot of politics [got] in the way," Spyda said. "I don't care. It's gonna drop. The streets are gonna be happy, so I'm good."

Red Spyda, who named himself after his favorite cartoon character, Spider-Man, said the streets are going to stay elated because he plans to release more unreleased verses from B.I.G. and Tupac.

"I have more unheard Biggie songs," said Spyda, who obtains his rare vocals through both legitimate and "sneaky" methods. "I have one with him and Mase nobody has ever heard."

Although he's amped about eventually releasing the Biggie street gems, Spyda said he prefers to leave the cat in the bag about when he plans to do so. "I'mma keep that under wraps," he said. "From what I hear, they're doing a Biggie duets album. I can do something [on] who I think Biggie should do a duet with, [and] throw the record out to get some work. I'd like to see Big with people he rocked with. I don't want to see Big with a bunch of different people. I'd rather throw Lil' Kim or Lil' Cease on there. I won't put Tupac and Biggie on a record."

But Spyda said his upcoming album will feature appearances by both legends as well as other hip-hop trailblazers. Don't expect the project to be sold in stores.

"[This winter] we're going to do a limited-edition mixtape," Spyda said. "All classic rhymes by the illest hip-hop artists ever to touch the ground: Nas, Jay-Z, Big, Pac — the ones everybody knows. I'm gonna build my beats around [the vocals]. It's gonna be a street tape. That's gonna be the next project.

Upcoming movie has Suge/Tupac similarities
Posted by Jon on Sunday, March 9 2003
There is an upcoming movie titled Hollywood Homicide which has parallells to the theory that Suge was involved in the murder of Tupac. Cast credits include Harrison Ford, Josh Harnett, Master P and Kurupt. Below is the plot summary:

Two LAPD homicide detectives who moonlight in other fields, Joe Gavilian (Ford) (a real estate agent) and K.C. Calden (Hartnett) (a yoga instructor and wannabe actor), investigate the slaying of a rap group on stage that is possibly orchestrated by Sartain (Washington), a notorious rap label boss who is rumored to have arranged the death of rap artists in the past who wanted to get out of their contracts, and whose head of security is himself a former LAPD officer.

Biggie & Tupac Review
Posted by on Saturday, March 8 2003
As reported earlier, Biggie & Tupac screened at the Adelaide Film Festival. Here is a completely unbiased review from a HipHop fan, who is not a huge fan of Tupac and kept an open perspective while watching the movie.

Biggie & Tupac

Biggie & Tupac recently screened at the Adelaide International Film Festival. Rukas and I had the great pleasure to attend the sell out screening. Upon arriving at the cinema we were greeted by a line up stretching out of the cinema and onto the side-walk. A cinema usher was informing everyone who did not have tickets that the screening was sold out. Disappointment was evident from those who had not pre-purchased, as this was the sole scheduled screening of this feature documentary.

Biggie & Tupac weighs in at over 110 minutes and is narrated and directed by English spoken Nick Broomfield. Mr. Broomfield explores the various holes and misconceptions about the life and deaths of Tupac Shakur and Christopher Wallace. Served up are various interviews ranging from ex-LAPD officers to friends and associates of the two. Added to the mix is (some never before seen) archived footage of Tupac and Biggie. Nick Broomfield does a good job of trying to piece together various theories surrounding the probable reasons for the two
drive-by shootings.

The filmmaker touches on several sensitive issues, it appears at times he is blissfully unaware of the danger his putting himself in by asking some questions in his condescending manner. No where is this more obvious when he talks to Suge Knight, who then was serving time in jail for a parole violation. Some of the following questions are raised throughout the other interviews. What were off-duty LAPD officers doing working for Death Row as security? Where was the FBI during the drive-by shooting of Tupac Shakur? (FBI was currently investigating Suge Knight and had him under constant surveillance).

For any Tupac or Biggie fan this is a must see documentary, for the simple fact it does a reasonable job of not being biased or sensationalizing their deaths. Added to that, who wouldn't pay money to see a white middle-aged English man wondering around LA and NY strapped with a boom-mike asking known felons and gangster affiliates probing questions about two unsolved murders?

Elridge Cleaver, former Minister of Information for the Black Panther Party, speaks on Pac
Posted by Jon on Tuesday, March 4 2003
Elridge Cleaver, former Minister of Information for the Black Panther Party, speaks on Tupac in an interview at PBS. Below is the transcript in reference to Tupac, be sure to check out the entire interview.

GATES: Eldridge, many people compare Huey Newton with Tupac Shakur. And some people even suggest that without a gangster culture, that is, 30 years ago, a person like Tupac would have emerged as a leader of a revolutionary group like Huey P. Newton.

CLEAVER: This is an a historical perspective because they do not understand that Tupac is a child of Huey Newton and Malcolm X. That Tupac would not have been who he was had he not been born of parents who followed Huey Newton. Afeni Shakur and Amumu Shakur were members of the Black Panther party. And it was because of that experience that they were able to raise Tupac with the mentality and the spirit that he had. So talking about going back like that, saying that Tupac would have been Huey, you cannot unring the bell.

GATES: But Tupac was a gangster, wasn't he?

CLEAVER: Huey was a gangster.

GATES: Oh, he was?

CLEAVER: I'm not-- I'm talking about a real gangster. Tupac, they were talking about gangster rap. Huey P. Newton was a gun toting gangster, but that's not all he was. I'm saying he went through that experience as a criminal, but the thing about Tupac was his spirit and his rebellion against oppression. This comes from the way that he was raised and the values that were transmitted to him.

His father died in a gun fight with the New York police department and so Afena was a very strong stalwart of the Black Panther party and Tupac was raised like that. He is what we call a panther cub. And that was what he was about.

And that is why it was such a blow, [Tupac's] liquidation, and many people think that it was the COINTELPRO that took him out because the story doesn't hold up because anybody who knows Las Vegas knows that after the Mike Tyson fight there, there is no way that anybody going to drive along upside of another car, shoot them and drive away because it's gridlocked for blocks around there, man. So that is not what happened. There is more to it than that.

Lil' Cease confesses that Biggie's "Long Kiss Goodnight" is about Tupac
Posted by on Saturday, March 1 2003
In the latest issue of XXL magazine, there's an article on the making of The Notorious B.I.G.'s second and last album, Life After Death. Throughout the years there's been a lot of speculations whether or not the song "Long Kiss Goodnight" was really dissing Tupac.

"That was about Pac," Lil' Cease said. "[Biggie] had some shit at the beginning of that, though. Nobody heard it, on the real. We had to change it. It was a little too much. I can't remember what Big said about him, but it was terrible. It couldn't make it. He didn't want to do it."

P. Diddy who's featured screaming throughout the song, on the other hand, denies this.

"Naw, it was just some emcee lyrics," he said. "I know people wanna have their imagination, but it was just lyrics. You're hearing it from the horse's mouth. I would tell the truth."
