Ice Cube's greatest hits |
| Posted Wednesday, August 29, 2001 by Chris |
Priority Records is scheduled to release Ice Cube's greatest hits and videos on October 23, 2001.
"It's coming out kinda tight," Cube said in an interview with SonicNet.com.
The album will feature a new song titled "In The Midnight Hour" produced by the Neptunes.
"The record companies kinda hooked it up," Cube said. "When [the Neptunes] heard they was going to work with me, they put some stuff together in Virginia and flew it our here," he said. "As a rapper, when you get some producers like the Neptunes to have something tailor-made for you, that's kinda of what you look for."
The first verse of "In The Midnight Hour" is sampled from "Straight Outta Compton."
"The first line is 'Straight outta Compton, crazy motherfucker named Ice Cube, and I'm rolling with the motherfucking Neptunes.' That's the flavor. It's like old and new," he said.
"It's a mixture of things," he said. "Songs that were big on radio and chart-wise, like 'It Was A Good Day,' but also songs like 'A Gangsta's Fairytale' from my earlier years on AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted. A video was never made, the song never charted, but clearly one of my greatest hits. 'Jackin' For Beats' is on there. 'Pushin' Weight,' 'We Be Clubbin',' 'Check Yo Self,' a whole lot of them."
"This might be my last record for a while, 'til I get rejuvenated," he said. "Right now I do records more for fun. The hustle and bustle of the business is boring, it's wack, it's depressing. I refuse to play the record game at this point in my career. "The business part is always the part that's wack," he added. "You gotta do it, but it's always a drag. I been doing records so long, movies is the natural progression for me. I can show my creativity on the big screen. Not only audio, but visual." |

Friends' reaction on Aaliyah's death |
| Posted Wednesday, August 29, 2001 by Chris |
Damon Dash: She was the best person I ever knew... I never met a person like her in my life. Every day that we were together, we cherished. Every memory - every day was a special event, whether it was going to a store or going to a movie or just sitting in a house. Wherever we were was like our own little party, in our own little world. She was the only girl that got to hang out with my homeboys on the level of a homeboy. It was like being able to be with your homeboy and your girl at the same time... We just generally had a lot of fun together. We were definitely gonna be married. As soon as she had time, we were getting married - like after The Matrix. She was the one - she was definitely the one for me. It wasn't an official proposal, we had just talked about it, you know? She would just carry herself like such a normal individual. We just would pop into McDonald's or Wendy's or something, and people just wouldn't believe [it].
Ernie Isley: There are no words to express the loss of Aaliyah, whose unique talent was just beginning to blossom. The world will never get to see how her gift could have developed, and that is truly a loss.
Ginuwine: Words can't express what I'm feeling, she was family. I will truly miss her.
Hank Neuberger: It was clear she had all the gifts. She had a great voice, she was stunningly beautiful and she had a strong sense of what she could do at a very young age.
Hype Williams: As a performer, she was one of the best I have ever seen do what she does. Some stars have a unique way of capturing their audience without saying a word. That comes from charisma, it comes from charm. A lot of it comes from someplace else. I can't really define it, but I'm always able to recognize it. She had that 'magic,' for lack of a better word.
Jerkins: She grew like crazy from the time I worked with her to the stuff she's doing now. She was trying to find herself before. But by the third album, she was more of a performer, she became more of an artist.
Jermaine Dupri: I think it was fly that she took chances on her music. Just the softness of how she sang over them hard-ass beats, it was something different.
Jet Li: I heard of the devasting news and am deeply saddened that she is no longer with us. She was a wonderful and talanted artist who will be missed by everyone whose lives she touched.
Joel Silver: Aaliyah didn't want to do that. She reached down somewhere and found this place where she could be this incredible actress. She was a fantastic girl.
Jomo Hankerson: We always knew Aaliyah could be something special. She came out of the womb special.
Jonathan Davis: She does really great, different stuff that's dark. She skirts the goth edge. There's something cool and mysterious about her. I dug that. Just a dark little girl singing some cool-ass shit.
Michael Rymer: Aaliyah, who doesn't have an evil atom in her body, came off as this intensely sexual, sensuous, delightfully evil, naughty performer. It was a very tough role to pull off... I think she delivers. Of all people I know, [she] had such a clear and pure spirit, such a clear idea of what she wanted. It's hard to imagine that being interrupted. I would come home from the set and say to my wife, "This girl is a freak - she never loses her temper, she never gets impatient, she's a dream to direct. You give her a note and she's like a machine, she executes it. She put up with hours of make-up and teeth and contact lenses and skimpy costumes in the freezing cold all night. She was a very pure spirit. It's easy to say now, and we said it then, at the end of the day, that girl is an... Angel. I'm a writer and I couldn't contrive a more tragic scenario. The only real consolation is that she died doing what she loved to do. She was not a frustrated person whose goals had eluded her. She was doing what she loved and had nothing to regret. Aaliyah and I devised a plan in which she would be the oldest, most powerful creature in the world, but she would play it like a child, like a kitten playing with a mouse. It could have been a complete joke and come off in an embarrassing way. We both knew we were taking a huge risk and that if we pulled it off, it would be much more exciting than if we approached it more conventionally. She was a young queen.
P. Diddy: She was one of those individuals that would light up a room. She always greeted you with a smile. Her time was coming; [she] was just about to explode.
RZA: Aaliyah was a real beatiful sister. She's my favorite artist. She always came with a phat single.
Timbaland: She was like blood, and I lost blood. Me and her together had this chemistry. I kinda lost half of my creativity to her. It's hard for me to talk to the fans right now. Beyond the music, she was a brilliant person, the [most special] person I ever met.
Treach: She was like a little sister to the industry, everybody loved her. From when we met her till now, she was never on no superstar shit. If she met you, it was like she knew you all her life, never no phoniness. She was like my lil' sis. She'd come up and put her arm next to me like, 'Listen, we gonna make this song together. I don't want you to do just one verse and it's over. We gonna do the hook together.' You hear certain things through the industry about who you can work with and who you can't. You heard nothing but good stuff about Aaliyah.
Virgin Records: Her depth and versatility as an artist was matched by the passion and devotion she had for her craft. |

My disgust for Ja Rule |
| Posted Thursday, August 23, 2001 by Jon |
I'm really upset that Ja Rule will be releasing the song "So Much Pain" on his upcoming album. "Pain", which was released on one version of the Above the Rim soundtrack is one of the best, and definately a classic, Tupac track. Yet it is unknown to many rap fans.
What Ja Rule has done is "remix" the song, by stealing the verses of the original "Pain" and changing the wording slightly to fit him, instead of Pac. The beat and chorus are nearly the same.
Many rap fans aren't going to know that the song was originally Tupac's and are going to think Ja Rule is tight, and since Pac is in the third verse, fans are going to think Ja Rule and Tupac were close.
It's going to be frustrating when I see people pop this song in their CD player and say "Ja Rule is tight." Then I'll spend the next long as it takes educating them on why Ja Rule is a biter. But I did it with Puffy and I guess now I'll have to do it with Ja Rule. |

XXL's Tupac tribute |
| Posted Wednesday, August 22, 2001 by Chris |
This month's issue of XXL features a Tupac tribute. Below is a part of it:
"Tupac Shakur comes to us, searching for answers, searching for a worthy opponent, searching for the next word to his rhyme. His militant debut, 2Pacalypse Now (1991), bursts at the seams with a pubescent grasp of Black nationalism: broad-stroked diatribes against the police, heavy-handed denunciations of "AmeriKKKA," shout-outs to political prisoners and refugees, "Words of Wisdom" is an incendiary blast of street corner punditry worthy of a young Farrakhan.
Despite the album's thick pedagogy, 'Pac is able to emerge as the nigga next door with "If My Homie Calls," and "Tha Lunatic." But the best moments are "Brenda's Got A Baby" and "Part Time Mutha" where 'Pac assumes the position of observerant storyteller. The result? Two songs that speak more about the Black condition than all the fire-and-brimstone rhetoric spewed throughout the rest of the disc.
Where the overwhelming majority of music artists peak with their early work, 2Pacalypse shows promise that 'Pac's best days are ahead of him. But things get worse before they get better. Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z... (1993) represents the nadir of 2Pac's musical career. The sounds are a hodgepodge of Cali crafts vying for New York novelty. 'Pac tries to be everything to everyone here: Then-Vice President Dan Quayle's boogeyman, the savior of the Black Nation, and friend to all MCs." |

The Source magazine listed Tupac in the "5 ten 15 20" section of their Septerber issue. It reads:
FIVE YEARS AGO...SEPTEMBER 1996
On Septermber 13, Tupac Shakur was pronounced dead after being shot five days earlier. His death would go down in history as one of hip-hop's most devestating moments.
Ask me why they put Puffy on the cover of this months magazine and you'll hear some foul language. |

Left Eye talks about "Untouchable" |
| Posted Friday, August 10, 2001 by Chris |
"The track with Tupac is titled 'Untouchable,' and it speaks for itself," Left Eye said in a recent interview with MTV. "Tupac and everything about him is untouchable to me. I didn't record the song with him. I got a copy of the song and his lyrics were on the track. If you want to talk about whether I recorded it before or after his death, I can't answer that. It's still a mystery to me."
Left Eye said she's asking Tupac about the mysteries of life on the song.
"I'm basically asking him to answer those questions for me," Left Eye said. "In the third verse he gives me his view from the other side. Some of the song's lyrics are so heavy. He says things like, 'You remember me legendary, I live eternally.' He produced the song. It's dynamite to me because he isn't known as a producer. It's like a double whammy because I get a song produced by Tupac — a song featuring him that actually features me. I'm featured on a Tupac song on my album."
"Untouchable" is featured on Left Eye's debut solo LP, Supernova, which has been delayed from August 14 to fall, 2001. |

Tupac on Ja Rule's next LP? |
| Posted Friday, August 10, 2001 by Chris |
Murder Inc./Def Jam Music Group is scheduled to release Ja Rule's third LP, Pain Is Love, on October 9, 2001. It features "So Much Pain" which has almost the same lyrics and production as "Pain" by Tupac featuring Stretch which was featured on Warren G's "Regulate" single and the Above The Rim (cassete) soundtrack. The only difference is that Ja Rule does the first and second verse, the third verse is still by Tupac.
"It's been a jinx with me and Case," Ja Rule said in a recent interview with MTV. "Everything we've done hasn't got cleared. We made a record in like '95, '96. We did a song called 'Thug Life,' which sampled Prince's ['Pop Life'.] Prince never clears anything."
Before his death, Tupac made a yet to be released song titled "Pac's Life" which also sampled Prince's "Pop Life." |

Asu talks about Tupac |
| Posted Friday, August 10, 2001 by Chris |
Asu talks about Tupac in an interview at Thugline Records' official website, ThuglineRecords.com. He made his debut on Nice & Smooth's album Ain't Nothing Changed which was released in 1992. He met Tupac in 1994 through Greg Nice, they recorded several songs including the "Thug Nigga" and "World Wide Dime Piece" which were supposed to be on the One Nation project which has yet to be released. Asu, Tupac, the Outlawz, Greg Nice, LS, Snoop Dogg and others were supposed to form one group. Asu later signed with Krayzie Bone's Thugline Records. Below is a part of the interview:
ThuglineRecords.com: Who owns the rights of the songs you did with Tupac for the One Nation project and will they ever will be released?
Asu: Death Row Records since they were recorded in the Death Row Studios and Pac's mom own the rights of those songs, I dunno if they will ever be released, but I think not since they are around for so long.
Was the album supposed to be on Makaveli Records?
Naw, it was a supposed to be Death Row Records' release, I think Makaveli Records was not setup at that time.
Was Makeveli Records real setup, and who owns it now?
I don't know about that, that were plans after the One Nation project.

Outlawz confront P. Diddy? |
| Posted Friday, August 10, 2001 by Chris |
On August 1, 2001, the Outlawz confronted P. Diddy at the MTV's 20th Anniversary concert which was held at the Hammerstein Ballroom. According to witnesses, the Outlawz ruined the tribute for Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G. When Busta Rhymes, Ja Rule, Naughty By Nature, P. Diddy, Run DMC and Salt 'N Pepa were performing the Outlawz suddenly began messing around and screaming. P. Diddy ignored them until Napoleon snatched the mic from his hand.
"Suddenly everything got serious. There was a lot of pushing and showing and people were flailing all over the stage," one witness said.
"The kid confronted him and Puffy got right in his face," another witness said. "Puffy grabbed the mic back and everybody started screaming and talking trash."
P. Diddy was cleared from the stage and security threw out the Outlawz who made their way into the concert as guests of Naughty By Nature.
That's the story media is reporting. Below is the Outlawz's story courtesy of AllHipHop.com:
Outlaw Recordz
August 3, 2001
The Sensitivity Of The Tupac and Biggie Legacy Continues
New York, NY… Hammerstein Ballroom, in response to the glut of stories that ran regarding the words between The Outlawz and P. Diddy at the MTV 20th Anniversary party on Wednesday, August 1… miscommunication erupted.
A spokesman from Outlaw Recordz feels their side of the story needs to be heard. The Outlawz were invited guests of Treach from Naughty By Nature because Treach was close with Tupac and he felt that the Outlawz should be there to shed a tear for their mentor and family member (the number one selling rap artist of all time) the late Tupac Shakur.
During sound check for the MTV 20th Anniversary Hiphop medley… The Outlawz and Treach from Naughty By Nature came on stage for Tupac's tribute at the end of the medley. Napoleon from the Outlawz received the mic from P. Diddy so he could represent for Tupac. After the tribute was done P. Diddy received the mic back. However, Napoleon from The Outlawz felt the need to pay respect to other fallen Hiphop artists such as: Eazy-E, Big Pun, Freaky Tah, Big L, etc. Both entourages thought there were words being exchanged and there weren’t. Unfortunately it turned into something that it really wasn't. Because of the sensitivity of the history, people who weren’t involved overreacted. Afterwards both camps went behind closed doors and cooler heads prevailed.
A spokesman from Outlaw Recordz adds, "It was Hammerstein Ballroom's security who asked The Outlawz to vacate the premises because of the sensitivity of the situation."
E.D.I. from The Outlawz spoke with AllHipHop.com and said the following, "We lost two of the greatest rappers of all time and it's ridiculous to assume that we came to rekindle old beef." |

Daz sues Suge and Death Row |
| Posted Friday, August 10, 2001 by Chris |
On August 1, 2001, Daz Dillinger filed a $2 million lawsuit against Marion "Suge" Knight and Death Row Records in Los Angeles Superior Court. The complaint is for breach of contract, constructive trust, conversion, declaratory relief, demand for accounting, intentional and negligent misrepresentation and unjust enrichment.
According to the suit, between 1993 and 1999, Suge and Death Row Records held Daz hostage to unconscionable and unenforceable agreements, never gave accounting to him, they stole tens of millions of dollars in record sales and royalties from him, they violated agreement after agreement, each time promising to honor the new one. In 1999, they "bullied" him into a new contract which purported to allow for his freedom from creative and financial captivity at Death Row Records. |

Music Speaks Louder Than Words |
| Posted Friday, August 10, 2001 by Chris |
It seems like Kurupt wasn't pleasured with the results of his and Daz Dillinger's latest LP, Dillinger & Young Gotti. He says their next album, Music Speaks Louder Than Words, will be more like their first, Dogg Food.
"It's going to be executive produced by Fredwreck and Daz Dillinger," Kurupt said in a recent interview with MTV. "We already already started on that. Space Boogie, I'm taking everybody into my mind. I've never done - I always kept [the fans] right in front of my face. But I'm [getting ready] to take them deep back into my mind. The best way to explain [Music Speaks] is listen to Dogg Food.
"[I told Daz], 'We gonna sit back and listen to that motherfucker for three months; listen to it all the time. We gonna reconstruct the whole Dogg Food feel,'" he said. "I told Daz, 'We need to go back to that level musically and verbally.' You hear how our voices sound? We was more laid back, we was more into partying." |

Kurupt and Reed talk relationships |
| Posted Friday, August 10, 2001 by Chris |
"She's Kobe, and I'm Shaq," Kurupt said about his fiancée, Natina Reed, in a recent interview with MTV. "I think we're gonna go ahead, do that big step and get married - probably in late 2002, beginning of 2003," Kurupt continued. "Right now, we're just gonna work. We got a lot of work we got to do."
Incase you didn't know, before Kurupt got together with Reed he dated Foxy Brown. On June 5, 2001, her third solo LP, Broken Silence, was released. On "7:30" she disses Reed.
"You can't chase something that doesn't chase you back," Reed said in a recent interview with MTV. "I don't spend a lot of time thinking about what people think about me. It's pretty - it's like people never grow up in this game. You watch Biggie and all that shit that [he] and Pac went through, and people still don't get the message. They still want to start the wars and create fires."
Kurupt added that despite that he rode with Tupac he remained friends with Bad Boy Entertainment and tried to get Tupac to squash the beef. |
