Two years after, it seems like Freaky Tah's murder has been solved. On July 16, 2001, Kelvin Jones confessed that he murdered Freaky Tah at the Queens County Courthouse. Jones faces 15 years in prison.

Raheem Fletcher who drove Jones to and from the murder scene is serving a seven year prison term for manslaughter and the van's owner, Ryan Firth, has yet to be sentenced.

American 'White' Rapper
Posted Wednesday, July 18, 2001 by Rukas
I thought this was fucked up. On every news report I saw, on every Australian channel, they always refered to Eminem as 'the American white rapper'. Each news report seemed to stress that he is white. Its fucked up how they can't get past color and simply say he is a rapper.

Posted Wednesday, July 18, 2001 by Rukas
Daz has dropped the price of Makaveli & Dillinger - Don't Go To Sleep to a low $39.95 plus shipping and handling. While this is still more then other EP's, its very low compared to the original $500 Daz was charging, and getting. Damn, now I really feel sorry for those of you who spent $500 on it. The deadline for orders has also dropped to September 1st. There are 1,103 US copies and 80,202 international copies left.

More about Poetic's death
Posted Tuesday, July 17, 2001 by Chris
On June 15, 2001, Anthony "Poetic" Berkley of the Gravediggaz died at the Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California at 01:45 PM after struggling metastic colon cancer for two years. He was only 35-year-old.

In April, 1999, Poetic collapsed in the studio and was taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed with cancer. When he had three months left to live, he started an organization named the Life Goes On Foundation which was to raise funds for his medical expenses and to help other people with life threatening problems. He also worked with Wendy Day Of The Rap Coalition, a non-profit organization which promotes artistic empowerments.

Despite his struggle, Poetic produced, recorded and wrote several songs for the Gravediggaz's fifth LP, Nightmare In A-Minor, due out August, 2001. On July 13, 2001, Poetic was unable to talk to his representatives to complete a press release for the LP.

"Whatever [Poetic] has done musically is going to live on, and I am proud to have been a part of that," Prince Paul said in a statement.

"He wanted everything to go as usual, period," his publicist Chase said in an interview with Vibe. "He had no qualms about the group name or what they stood for. That didn't bother him at all. He was like, 'Just do it.' Poetic wouldn't want anyone mourning for him. He would want everyone to celebrate life and his new album."

"Poetic was more than just a recording artist; he used to come to the monthly seminars [that] the Rap Coalition organized and rarely missed one because he was completely dedicated to learning as much as he could, and to teaching up-and-coming artists about the music business," Wendy Day wrote in an e-mail to Meridan Entertainment. "He was truly a gifted human being and incredible talent who will be sorely missed by the music industry. He was a true warrior."

R.I.P Poetic
Posted Tuesday, July 17, 2001 by Rukas
The Gravediggaz' Poetic, born Anthony Berkeley, died on the morning of Sunday July 15th at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles following a two year battle with metastasic colon cancer. Our prayers go out to his family and friends, may he rest in peace.

Poetic was only given a few months to live when the cancer was first diagnosed in April of 1999. In an attempt to pay for the proper treatment, several benefits were held. These will continue in an effort to help Poetic's wife, Dee Dee Hill pay for the very large medical bills. If fans would like to make a donation they can send checks or money orders (addressed to Poetic or Anthony Berkeley) to:

Anti-P. Diddy news
Posted Monday, July 16, 2001 by Chris
Here's a part of an interview with P. Diddy - as he now calls himself - by MTV which shows how fake he is.

"MTV: I know on the album you made comments to people who called you the "Shiny Suit Guy."

P. Diddy: You all remember when Bad Boy put on a big tour [in 1997] and me and Mase had on the silver shiny suits? Then, six months later, [I would see] friends of mine, friends [in] the industry on MTV. They would be like, "We ain't no shiny suit rappers." But they never said, "Yo, Puff with the shiny suit." They never said my name. I was the one they were talking about. So I made a little interlude [on the album] about it. I just confessed that I was Shiny Suit Man, and it was all in fun. There wasn't any anger involved.

Are you still going to come out in shiny suits?

No, no, no."

Makaveli & Dillinger Sales Update
Posted Monday, July 16, 2001 by Rukas
Apparently Daz has sold 765 copies of Makaveli & Dillinger: Don't Go 2 Sleep. At $500 each, this gives him $382500. There are only 1235 copies left, however Daz will be releasing a further 100 000 copies for international buyers at $100 each. It is unknown whether these copies will be any different from the 2000 US ones, however they probably will be otherwise no one would buy the $500 ones.

If Daz sells the total 2000 US ones for $500 and the 100 000 international ones for $100, he will make a total of eleven million dollars!

Janet Jackson's Tupac Tribute
Posted Tuesday, July 10, 2001 by Jon
For those of you who didn't know, Janet Jackson and Tupac both appeared together in the film Poetic Justice. In the film they had a scene where they kissed and Janet demanded Tupac take an aids test. This caused a bit of static between the two. Tupac responded in the song "Got My Mind Made Up" saying "It's similar to Rhythm Nation, but thugged out, forgive me Janet".

On Janet Jackson's current tour she's been giving a tribute of sorts to Tupac. During her performances of "Again", she displays pictures of Tupac from Poetic Justice on the massive screens on her set.

Australia Considering To Ban Eminem
Posted Friday, July 6, 2001 by Rukas
It seems that Eminem’s Australian tour may be canceled. The rapper is scheduled to appear in Melbourne on July 26th and Sydney on July 27th. However, the Australian government is yet to approve his entertainment visa and are experiencing growing pressure to ban him from touring Australia.

Tickets have already been on sale for sometime now, but Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock has said that the Australian Government was still considering whether to grant the visa, and said the reasons for the possible ban are Eminem’s lyrics and history of gun related charges. Australia’s Prime Minister John Howard was in a radio interview when he was asked about the Eminem tour. He said that Eminem’s lyrics are “sickening and offensive.”

"I think we have been too silent for too long about the impact of some of these things, you cannot keep bombarding people with violent messages and anti-social messages without them having some impact."

A conservative Australian politician and a family lobby group have urged the government to ban Eminem from touring Australia. It looks like this issue will not be easily solved and a decision could take up to three weeks.

This is not good for any Australian hip hop fans, whether they like Eminem or not. If Em gets banned, then other rappers considering touring Australia may change their mind. Which would suck as some great artists are considering touring late this year and next.

Tupac In Entertainment Weekly
Posted Thursday, July 5, 2001 by Jon
In the most recent issue of EW they have an "It" List which lists Tupac as the "It Legacy". This is what it had to say:

AGE: 25 at time of death

WHY HIM: The New York Times calls his posthumous resurgence "a cultural revolution staged by a corpse." Rapper Tupac Shakur's rebellious image, poetic eloquence, and violent death have inspired comparisons to John Lennon; in the four-plus years since his 1996 murder, people looking for a hero have made Tupacabilia an industry, including a seemingly limitless stream of new music, a play, a forthcoming biopic, and a possible annual convention.

WHY NOW: "It took time for everybody to look past the details of Tupac's life, and to really reexamine his work, what he was saying," says Michael Develle Winn, whose play about Tupac, Up Against the Wind, just completed a run in Manhattan. "He spoke honestly about his pain, his anger, and his place in society in a thoughtful way that a lot of people can relate to."

NEXT: A fresh two-CD set of the artist's material is scheduled for a November release.

Posted Tuesday, July 3, 2001 by Chris
In the beginning of John Singleton's new film, Baby Boy, Jody which is played by Tyrese goes into his bedroom and "Hail Mary" begins to play and then the camera shows Jody's wall which has the photo on The Rose That Grew From Concrete painted onto it. The camera focuses of the painting several times during the film and the most dramatic scenes in Jody's room have the painting seemingly looking down on him.

KOCH To Distribute Outlawz and DPG?
Posted Sunday, July 1, 2001 by Rukas
Rumor has it that after working with Fredro Starr on his debut album, Firestarr, the Outlawz are ready to sign a distribution deal with his distributor, KOCH Entertainment. DPG Recordz may do the same. Daz is working on an album with Luke who is also distributed by KOCH Entertainment. This would be great for both independent labels as it would allow them to be distributed internationally. Other artists that KOCH distribute include KRS One, Layzie Bone, Flesh-N-Bone and B-Legit.
