2. Flawless - Gonzoe, Kurupt and Roscoe

HitEmUp.com Shutting Down Temporarily
Posted Thursday, July 27, 2000 by Jon
HitEmUp.com is about to be shut down by it's hosting company due to excessive bandwidth and server resource usage.  We've been through about 8 different hosts over the span of it's existance and have been cancelled by each for the same reason.  We're at the point now where we need our own dedicated server, unfortunately the income of the site is extremely low in comparison to the cost of a dedicated server.

The site will NOT be closed permanently.  I don't care what it takes, the site will be opened again very soon.

For people with registered email accounts, you can still access your mail here. Make sure to bookmark it.

Thanks for your support.

Napster forced to shut down
Posted Thursday, July 27, 2000 by Jon
U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel has ordered an injunction against Napster (a company which allows it's users to trade mp3s) which is forcing it to shut down. The shut down at this point is temporary, depending on the outcome of the court case.

The situation to me is very simple. There is a lot of money to be made through the use/sale of mp3s. Both for the distributors of mp3s, the manufactuers of mp3 products (cds, players etc) and of course the artists. Napster, has found a way to cut out all parties and have found a nice loop hole in which to hide, due to the fact that they don't directly distribute music; They provide a means. How, and if it's necessary to make all parties involved happy, is where the question lies. For now lets watch the the mp3 scene drop back to the underground.

Listen to the BigL and Tupac Cut
Posted Sunday, July 23, 2000 by Jon
Yes Indeed ! ... I got something the world ain't ready for ! ...

Here it is, the Big L and Tupac cut called Deadly Combination, scheduled to appear on Big L's new album when it's released on August 1st. I've yet to receive confirmation that this is the exact cut which will appear on the upcoming album.

As for the source of the song, I'm not sure whether it was recorded with Big L and Tupac together in the studio or not. However, I don't think it was. The song would appear to be just a mix by the "Mix King". Tupac's verse in this song is the same as his verse in Representing for Ron G.

Tupac to appear on Big L album !
Posted Friday, July 21, 2000 by Jon
I gotta say, I'm excited about this one. Big L's new album The Big Picture has been hit with an August 1st release date and includes a song featuring Tupac called DEADLY COMBINATION. No doubt it's a deadly combination. Besides the fact that they were 2 of the illest lyricists, they both rapped with emotion that made them so much better than most. It's going to be unreal to hear them on the same track. Unfortunately, like Tupac, Big L also died of gun shot wounds, him on February 15, 1999.

Suge Knight spoke in an exlusive interview to HitsDailyDouble on July 19th. Among topics he talked about the killing of Tupac and the 4CD Box set he plans to release of Tupac's work. The box set, we reported before as titled Clearing out the Vaults, has been renamed to The Safe, and will come out in the shape of a safe.

Interview Clip:

"All I remember is getting a bullet in my head," he says of the Tupac murder. "It's like my grandmother said, ‘Whatever hand you're dealt, that's what you have to deal with.' You can't justify what goes on in life."

As for telling NBC's Brian Ross he wouldn't help the police even if he knew the killer, he remains adamant: "I've never tried to be a detective. We're not in heaven—this is the real world. Whoever did this, they know who they are and they have to live with themselves. I would never be a snitch. We have to forgive, not punish. Jesus died for our sins. Who are we to judge? I try to go by society's rules as best as I can, but I don't like rats."

Straight Outta Hunters Point
Posted Tuesday, July 18, 2000 by Jon
Several weeks ago there were troubling headlines that got disseminated around the world that spoke of a 'Rap War' going on in the Bayview Hunters Point section of San Francisco. Two rival record labels West Mobb and Big Block supposedly had an exchange of words which resulted in 20 people getting shot and 4 people killed in a two week period of time. News reports framed the conflict as local rappers who lived within blocks of each other dissing each other on records and having those vinyl battles escalate to deadly violence on the streets. The conflicts brought an onslaught of media attention but sadly never captured the 'real' and underlying stories leading up to the conflict. The violence while involving two labels was the result of drama between two groups of people and had very little to do with people dissing each other on record. More then a few outlets tried to make comparisons to the feud between 2Pac and Biggie. But according to folks within the Bayview Hunters Point community there were very few similarities in that regard.

Over the past weeks a lot of folks had stepped up and helped bring about a truce. In particular, a long time rapper named Big Herm and brothers from the Nation of Islam played crucial roles. There are currently on going efforts by numerous activist, community groups and churches to help keep the peace that was established. Last week there was a Stop The Violence March led by Brothers Against Guns and activist AG Jelani. This upcoming weekend there will be a 'Youth Speak Out/Townhall meeting. Also out the rumble is a documentary that has been made called 'Straight Outta Hunters Point'. It was a project that was already in the works by a rapper/producer named Y2K who is with West Mobb records when the deadly conflicts erupted. Y2K managed to chronicle the events as well as the peace restoring efforts. He interviewed all the key players in the Bayview's Hip Hop community including Big Herm Lewis, Young Boo of 'rival' Big Block records and rap star Guice of Get Paid records. He also spent considerable time speaking with young people in the area about the types of things they are going through and experiencing. Accompanying the documentary will be a soundtrack that features a lot of the aspiring rappers in the area. Big props to Y2K and his hard work and efforts. For more information peep drop an email to mastamindy2k@hotmail.com. Also look out for their website which they are currently puttin together.. Who said folks in the hood don't use the Internet.

2Pac's Life & Death Inspires The Crow
Posted Friday, July 14, 2000 by Rukas
Towards the end of 1999, people close to The Crow franchise released the following statement:

"If there is a fourth The Crow movie, it may be loosely based on the death of a gangsta rapper (shades of Tupac Shakur) and would feature a 'HipHop' Crow..."

Now it seems that the rumor has been backed up and "Hip Hop" Crow is indeed in the works, or at least, in the idea planning stage. Rumor has it that the story will center around a rap artist named Lazarus who gets gunned down along with his girlfriend. The character is supposed to be loosely based on Tupac Shakur. Lazarus is set to be a deep character, who has two sides to him, a peaceful side and a vengeful side. Lazarus is also set up by his close friend, much like 2Pac was in 1994.

As for cast and crew, nothing is set in stone yet. But DMX has been attached to this project, by rumor at least. I personally don't think DMX could pull off this role, as his character in Romeo Must Die was as big a joke as X's acting. RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan has been rumored to be sitting in the directors chair as has video director Martin Weisz. I personally thing the rumors of DMX and RZA are all fan based, and probably wont happen.

The movie has no release date yet.

If you have any comments or info please email me here.

2Pac mentioned in The Source
Posted Friday, July 14, 2000 by Jon
The Source magazine ran an article on page 49 of their August issue titled "The Bridge is over - Are Today's musical mudslingers looking for fame ... or trouble?" The article talks about beefs in hiphop and beefs that get carried over into the street. They mention the beef between Tupac and Biggie, which of course made the rap game seem too real for a lot of people.

"It's as if Big and 'Pac are still alive and no one knows what talking shit can lead to. But they're not alive. Tupac and Biggie are dead. Over some bullshit. And if they were still alive, you can best believe they'd have squashed the beef by now. Or at least gotten to the bottom of it. When Tupac recorded Hit 'Em Up, Biggie was incredulous and publicly speculated as to why Pac was so venomous. And when Pac was killed, Big said he wished they could have spoken before it got so hectic. Who knows? If they were still here, maybe they would have recorded a track together by now. But there was no time for that back then. There were albums to sell and flames to fan. And directly or indirectly, they died over words. But we know this already."

The article is written by Aliya S. King

Dr. Dre Threatens Lawsuit Over Video
Posted Wednesday, July 12, 2000 by Chris
When Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, and Ice Cube announced that they would hit the road together, some predicted controversy would follow, but no one guessed that the tour's seven-minute intro video would stir up most of it.

Police stopped the video (a very R-rated affair depicting topless women and bloody gunfights) at last Thursday's "Up In Smoke" show at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena, prompting Dre to announce that he plans to file a civil-rights suit against the city of Detroit. Dre's camp says that the rapper acquiesced after Detroit police threatened to cut off power to the venue if the video was broadcast during the show.

"I just think that it was wack that everybody in Detroit that has been buying our records for the last decade couldn't see a real Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, 'Up In Smoke' show," Dre told MTV News' Kurt Loder immediately after the performance. "Hopefully these people can check out another show that we put together. It won't be at Joe Louis Arena. I would never in my life perform at Joe Louis Arena again, straight up, because it's too much bullsh** that goes on."

The rapper's lawyer, Howard King, told MTV News on Tuesday that the suit will likely be filed either Wednesday or Thursday, and that he and his client will seek "tens of millions" of dollars in damages. King said that he will ask for actual and punitive damages, because Dre feels that the Detroit police and the city displayed "outrageous behavior under the guise of law." King went on to call the case a "a no-brainer" and charged that the city and the police of Detroit came to them two hours before the show's scheduled start because they knew it was too late to obtain a court order.

"It's unconstitutional to deny public expression without a court order," said King.

Apparently airing the video isn't a litigation-free move either, as the "Detroit Free Press" reports that police have filed a complaint against the Palace Of Auburn Hills for allowing the footage to play during the tour's stop there last Friday. Police reportedly claim that the use of the video violated the venue's liquor license, which prohibits live or televised nudity. The "Free Press" reports that the venue could face fines and could see its license revoked or suspended.

Officials had tried to block the airing of the video during the Auburn Hills performance, but a U.S. District Judge reportedly intervened, ruling that the city could not pull the plug on the video.

The incident occurred Friday night after Kim attended Eminem's performance at the Up In Smoke Tour concert and then went to the afterwards party. Nelson has stated that Mrs. Mathers was drunk at the time and started "trashing the place". Rumor has it that after Eminem convinced her to calm down, she went to the bath room and slit her wrists. She was briefly admitted to a near by hospital but was released Saturday afternoon. She is now resting at the couples home. Neighbors have stated that Mrs. Mathers seems like a nice person, and probably couldn't take the pressure created from many of Eminem's songs, such as Kim.

92.3 The Beat sold - Snoop joins
Posted Saturday, July 8, 2000 by Jon
People in LA are buzzing about the big switch and changes made at 92.3 The Beat. To start, the station is no longer on 92.3. It was recently sold to Radio One which is headed by Katherine Hughes. Part of the deal was that Radio One would keep The Beat call letters [KKBT] and the personalities. However, they would obtain the weaker signal which is 100.3 FM as opposed to the monstrous 92.3 signal. The second change is that Snoop Dogg who was doing what he calls Dogghouse Radio on rival station Power 106 every Saturday afternoon, has been added to The Beat's line up and can now be heard on Friday nights. What will be interesting to see is whether or not Snoop draws protest from community groups..

Last month a number of people from local churches and drug prevention coalitions took issue with Snoop's frequent on air references to smoking chronic. They felt Snoop was sending out a bad message and as a result they intended to lead a protest against Power 106. I'm not sure of how things turned out...Power 106 at that time noted that they do not condone any illegal drug activity and that the station had donated more then half a million dollars in free air time to present anti-drug messages. In fact Snoop Dogg at that time had voiced one himself. It'll be interesting to see if Snoop tones it down a bit.. We'll keep you posted...

Ice T's Evidence
Posted Saturday, July 8, 2000 by Rukas
That O.G, Ice-T is set to be releasing a Greatest Hits album this August the 8th. The album is entitled Greatest Hits: The Evidence. Look out for some previously unreleased tracks, and even one or two new tracks to go along with his greatest hits spanning his 15 year career.

I'm hoping that at least one of the unreleased tracks is one of the rumored tracks done with 2Pac.

$200 million lawsuit vs BadBoy
Posted Saturday, July 8, 2000 by Jon
Puff Daddy, Lil' Kim, and Lil' Cease are reportedly among the defendants named in a $200 million lawsuit filed by a New York woman who claims that one of her private phone conversations was sampled without her consent.

New York's "Daily News" reports that the rappers were named along with Atlantic Records in a suit filed by Brooklyn's Danyella "Sunshine" Rogers. The 18-year-old woman reportedly charges that a racy phone conversation that she had with Lil' Cease later turned up on the rapper's 1999 hit "Play Around" without her knowledge or consent.

The suit reportedly charges that the track is an invasion of her privacy, and claims that it caused mental strain, humiliation, and damage to her reputation.

Lil' Cease's attorney was unavailable for comment at press time, while Atlantic declined to comment on the suit. Spokespeople for Combs were also unavailable for comment at press time, but the "Daily News" quotes his representatives as saying, "While [Combs] was an executive producer of the album, he was only a guest artist on this track and therefore not responsible in any way for clearances."

Tupac mentioned at Up In Smoke
Posted Thursday, July 6, 2000 by Chris
This is an e-mail I got about the Up In Smoke tour.

I was at the July 4th concert of the Up In Smoke Tour in Toronto, ON, Canada. It was an amazing tour, the best I've ever seen by far. Amazing sets, props, and it even had a storyline to it. Anyways, midway into Snoop and Dre's act, they stopped and held a rememberance for all the people lost in the music industry. They started with Eazy-E, Big Pun, B.I.G., Roger Troutman, and finally 2pac. Even Dre gave it up for 2pac and Snoop was like, "We gonna hear a lotta noise fo this muthafucka." After the cheering was done (by far the most for 2pac), Dre went on to say he had the pleasure of working with the last 2 individuals. California Love came on and Dre did his verse for it. Then Snoop stopped it and said, "Stop that POP bullshit, we gonna hear some gangsta shit!" Then 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted came on and Snoop did his parts and asked the crowd to rap 2pacs. It was good and I was glad they gave it up for Pac. Peace

What it Takes - Doc Da Vinci

In response to an avid reader’s request, I present the latest of my series. Just like the man of cloth, I spend my weeks delivering messages to you on why things are. Sometimes you may accept the message, other instances may call for personal rejection. This "diddy", is an essential. Rather than break down an artist, a transaction, or a mirage, we will tackle the conspiracy. The conspiracy is hip hop, oddly put. The conspiracy theory as I see it, of the famous three word phrase, "What It Takes." ... [ Click here for more ]

2Pac and Women - Al Coholic

I was watching VH-1's "The List" a while ago, and the topic was sexiest male. Someone chose 2pac Shakur, and I was surprised because mainstream society tends to either sleep on him or make uninformed assumptions and judgements about him. I thought "wow that's pretty cool that someone chose him." Just as soon as I thought that, someone said, "It is impossible for 2pac to be sexy because of the way he treats women." This comment ... Too $hort Discusses The Art Of Pimping
Posted Saturday, July 1, 2000 by Chris
Too $hort recently hollered at VIBE Online about the influence that the city of Oakland, California has had on his career and his choice of topics in his rhymes, in particular, the art of pimping. Too $hort said, "Even though Oakland is a helluva a gangsta town. I personally was not fascinated by gangstarism, pistols and guns, and shit. Since I was little, I would have my mother dress me like a pimp. I wouldn't say dress me like a pimp, but let me get that hat. - Some slick hat like the motherfuckers in the movie. I thought I was cool little motherfucker.

"Pimps went to our school. I was in the tenth grade. Pimps were in my high school. Motherfuckers were really dressing flamboyant like some of them old ass movies with gold pieces on their collars and a bunch of gold chains and had prostitutes picking them up after school. To see the shit up close, not in a movie, really made my whole little indulgence that much greater. I never really ever made a move to try to be a pimp like to say bitch, give me your money. But I adapted the ways. And I really learned the shit and consider myself to be of pimp knowledge. And that was a regular thing in Oakland and even to this day, motherfucker, be like, I'm a pimp. You can't handle hoes like this. You don't disrespect a pimp."
$hort Dog is scheduled to release his 13th album, YouNasty on September 12th. The first single, "2 Bitches," is currently ruling underground airwaves. Stay tuned to VIBE Online for our upcoming feature and video interview with the "Mack" himself.
