The Continual Influences of Tupac Shakur - layzielion@yahoo.com
Afeni Shakur, then known as Alice Faye Williams, may have been closer to the truth than she ever knew when, in The Womens House of Detention in Greenwich Village, she patted her pregnant stomach and stated, This is my prince. On The Eminem Parody:
* I have a question I hope you will address in 'The Rumor Mill.' I was listening to the radio today and they played a version of 'The Real Slim Shady' that was called 'My Reply.' They said that Christina recorded this song in response to Eminem's. Is this true? Thanks.
FALSE. Christina has not written, sung or asked anyone to write or sing a song in response to Eminem. It is only a radio station parody.

Blackstreet Members Make Amends |
| Posted Thursday, June 29, 2000 by Chris |
Chauncey "Black" Hannibal recently released a statement that he hasn't filed a lawsuit against former Blackstreet partner Teddy Riley. In May, Hannibal announced that he was suing Riley for $2 million dollars and misappropriation of funds. He also released a song, "Shame on You" dissing Riley and fellow R&B crooner Sisqo.
In the August issue of VIBE magazine, Chauncey sates, "I want to see the books. The first album sold 2 million. The second sold 8 million. The third probably went a million. That's 11 million records sold. I say he owes me $2 million. He probably owes me more."
The newly released statement says, "Obviously, there have been creative and artistic differences that have arisen between myself and Mr. Riley. I feel it is necessary to make this statement in order to express my regret for the false statements which were made about Teddy, by the media and others. Please understand that I am not, nor have I ever taken legal action against Teddy Riley or his agents or assigns. Additionally, I am not seeking two million dollars from Teddy Riley or his record label LOR Records."
The statements also declares that Riley developed the concept of Blackstreet in 1993 and that Riley provided Hannibal the opportunity to develop his musical talents, which led to his successful music career. The statement, which is dated June 22nd, says that the letter was issued "to express credit where it is due, and to express my desire to move beyond the legal action which has commanded a significant amount of both mine and Teddy's time." Hannibal's contract with Riley expires on August 10th. He is expected to be picked up soon and release a solo album.

More about the One Nation committee |
| Posted Tuesday, June 27, 2000 by Chris |
A rare video of an interview with a 17-year-old Tupac Shakur held the small audience rapt at the Tupac Amaru Shakur One Nation conference, held Saturday at Fremont High School in Oakland, California.
The 20-minute video was part of a daylong program of talks, movies, and workshops that used the legacy of the slain rapper as a jumping-off point for political discussion. Also presented during the event were song clips in which artists of varied musical styles set Shakur's poetry to music.
"That film can help clear up a lot of misconceptions about who he was," said Bobby McCall, a former Black Panther and father of Digital Underground rapper Money B, who also spoke at the event. "He was such a sweet kid, so smart, and he had such respect -- for women, for his elders."
In the video, created by teachers at Shakur's alma mater, Terra Linda High School, the rapper spoke with precocious confidence about his family, his political views, and his goals. The audience repeatedly laughed at his stories (which included one about quitting his pizza parlor job to attend the interview) and his zealous political plans, which included filling the rooms of the White House with homeless people.
He surprised his interviewers with his strong view on education: "To get us ready for today's world, it's not helping.... There should be a class on scams, a class on police brutality, a class on why people are hungry," the boyish Shakur, clad in a black tank top, said. "Instead there's classes like... gym. They should be teaching you to understand politicians' double-talk, not French and German. How can I go to Germany if I can't pay rent here?"
Leila Steinberg, Shakur's former manager who presented the video, also played excerpts from "The Rose That Grew From Concrete," an upcoming album of Shakur's poetry set to music. The collection, whose 24 songs also include work from Mos Def, K-Ci & JoJo, and Pharcyde's Tre, is expected out in September.
A small turnout in the morning at the Oakland high school built up to around 70 people, young and old, by midday. The speakers through the day were not discouraged by the turnout, inviting the audience to the front of the auditorium to create an intimate atmosphere, where audience members frequently contributed to discussions.
Several planned guests, including rapper M1 from Dead Prez and former Black Panther Geronimo Pratt, could not appear, but the event went more smoothly than the first conference, held in December.
Unlike the December conference, this year's event did not include a performance, though Money B rapped lines from a new song about Tupac, "Eyes On A Mill Ticket," at the audience's request. "Makin' songs about him/ Sayin' it's outta respect/ If it's outta respect/ Give his momma that check."
"I see a lot of shallow artists imitating what Pac did," Money B said afterward. "He was more than that, he had a depth. His shine was really bright."
Trying to identify the rapper's radical nature was a theme of the conference, where speakers and audience members sought to reconcile Shakur's thug image with his political and personal side.
The conference also featured a workshop about the effects of youth-crime law Proposition 21, a poetry presentation from Berkeley, California's Recovery Theater, and several movies about the history of the Black Panthers.
The core of the crowd held out through the long day of events, which never strayed too far from the theme of Tupac Shakur.
"Tupac, from the minute he could talk, was on a mission," Steinberg said. "Every waking breath was obsessed with revolution. People say, 'You're obsessed with Tupac.' I say I'm obsessed with revolution, with change."

Christina Aguilera disses Eminem |
| Posted Monday, June 26, 2000 by Jon |
Christina Aguilera has made a track in response to the dissing of her by Eminem. I guess being dissed on probably the biggest song of the summer is starting to get to her. It's a pretty funny track, especially when you consider there's a female pop singer dissing a rapper. It's done to the beat of The Real Slim Shady and she raps over it with pretty much the same rhyme pattern that Eminem uses. It starts off "Will the real Slim Shady please shut up ? Will the real Slim Shady please shut up? ... we're gonna have a problem here".

Once again, Afeni Shakur snubbed the One Nation committee. She never showed up to the conference, and neither did Mac Mall. The only people who showed up were Money-B, and Leila Steinberg. About 200 people showed up and it was better than the first one. They had workshops, and showed clips of Tupac in and out of jail. Money-B did a short performance, and it lasted from 9 am until 6 pm.

DJ Quik's new album Balance & Option dropped this month on Arista, the fifth album of his career. As usual, the album is full of tight party and pimp music with dope beats. Song 8 of the album is worth noting for it's references to Dr. Dre. Quik accuses his fellow Compton Native of being a homosexual and makes reference to Dre taking credit for the work of others. "I never put a name on a track that wasn't mine." Similar rumors have been spoken in regards to Dre by numerous rappers, from Eazy E to J. Barnes and of course Tupac.

This is from Yahoo.com, thanks to Neva_again for posting it on the board.
POMONA, Calif. (AP) - Rapper Nate Dogg was arrested Saturday for investigation of kidnapping his former girlfriend and torching a car.
The 30-year-old rapper, whose real name is Nathaniel Dwayne Hale, was arrested by a SWAT team at about 12:30 p.m. at his Pomona home, said Sgt. Norine Plett, a sheriff's spokeswoman.
He was booked for investigation of kidnapping, making terrorist threats, domestic violence and arson and was held in lieu of $1 million bail, Plett said.
Hale allegedly held his girlfriend against her will at a home in Lakewood, assaulted her and set her mother's car on fire.
The girlfriend, identified only as Rhoda, told KABC-TV that she had broken up with Hale several days earlier.
Hale got his start with rappers Snoop Dogg and Warren G in a Long Beach-area band. He later recorded with Dr. Dre on The Chronic and appeared on Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle.
Hale, Snoop Dogg and other rappers are part of the current Up In Smoke concert tour. |

Julius "Dr. J" Erving's son missing |
| Posted Friday, June 16, 2000 by Jon |
Cory Erving, the son of basketball legend Julius "Dr. J." Erving, has been declared missing and endangered. The 19-year-old was last seen on May 28th at a Lake Mary shopping mall, about 20 miles northeast of Orlando, Florida. A $25,000 reward has been offered for the safe return of Cory. He also has a learning disability and a history of drug abuse. Dr. J. gave a press conference yesterday with his wife and three adult children. He said, "That's an individual's worst nightmare. This bad dream has gone on for 16 days now, 16 very hard days."
Dr. J also said that Cory had plans to go to a Memorial Day weekend cookout with his family and was running an errand to pick up bread when he last spoke to his son. "He called me and said he would be home in 20 minutes. That was the last time I talked to him." Erving said his son was born with a learning disability which he described as a mild form of dyslexia and attention deficit disorder. He had to be put in special schools through eighth grade. Cory was working at an upscale sandwich shop and taking courses geared at getting a high school equivalency diploma. Despite his past trouble with drugs and alcohol, the Erving family believed he had turned his life around. Erving also said, "We felt he was on course to have some success in a life that has been very trying, living in the shadow of a public figure like myself and a high-profile family," Erving said.

According to prosecutor Shellie Samuels, Tarrance Vickers tried to intervene between an argument involving his brother and the rapper. Reports state that Flesh allegedly brandished an AK-47 out of a baby crib, inserted a magazine, pointed the gun at Vickers and proceeded to chase the two brothers up the street. Vickers now claims that he never saw Flesh with a gun. He now says, "No way. I didn't say none of that to any of the officers. He didn't have no gun. I1ve never seen that gun, not that I know of." During his testimony, Vickers denied nearly everything he initially told the police. He now says that he and Flesh got into a scuffle but both of them ran in different directions when the police came. Flesh is currently on probation for a 1998 arrest in which he pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon in Chatsworth, California. If convicted, he could face up to 19 years in prison. |

Spoken word album |
| Posted Thursday, June 15, 2000 by Chris |
K-Ci & JoJo, Run-DMC's Run, Mos Def, and Pharcyde rapper Tre will be among the artists featured on an upcoming spoken-word album built from the poetry of slain rapper Tupac Shakur.
The untitled project likely will be released in two volumes, with the first planned for a September release, according to Shakur's former manager and poetry mentor, Leila Steinberg.
Also on tap for the project are Quincy Jones, Tha Outlawz, Danny Glover, Jasmine Guy, Russell Simmons, Moroccan group Providence, poet Sonya Sanchez, and Black Panther Geronimo Pratt.
"We've taken Tupac's poems, left them intact, and let people interpret them in all the different genres and styles of music that we could," Steinberg said.
All the poems were published in "The Rose That Grew From Concrete," which hit stores late last year and features 72 poems Shakur wrote before he released his first solo album, 1992's "2Pacalypse Now." Musical styles represented on the LP include jazz, blues, classical, African, rock, reggae, and rap.
"The bed of music takes on that genre, but the poem itself is spoken," Steinberg said, adding that some artists have chosen to sing the poem after reciting it as a spoken-word piece.
The first artist to record for the project was virtuoso drummer Babatunde Olatunji, who recorded "Please Wake Me When I'm Free" in English and the African language Yoruba over Nigerian-style rhythms and drums.
K-Ci & Jo-Jo will record "Wife for Life" with up-and-coming hip-hop band 4th Avenue Jones, featuring rapper Ahmad, this week in Los Angeles.
Steinberg, a teacher and hip-hop manager who met Shakur when he was a 17-year-old transplant to the suburbs of Oakland, California, is executive producer of the project along with Shakur's mother, Afeni Shakur, Jamal Joseph, and Molly Monjauze. She has also videotaped the recording sessions with plans to upload clips to the project's Web site.
Afeni Shakur, who collaborated with Glover on one poem, will make the final calls in putting the project together.
The project will benefit several charities.

Eminem disciples threaten city with Arson |
| Posted Wednesday, June 14, 2000 by Jon |
Eminem's arrest in his home town of Warren, Detroit, last week has triggered an anonymous threat from a group calling themselves the 'South Warren Street Kids'. The two page letter was sent George Constance, the Warren City attorney who vowed to file charges against Eminem for the incidents which took place on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th June. (see Eminem Arrested). It also refers to Eminem as "our Christ", and threatens an arson attack unless the charges are withdrawn, saying, "We party in [Eminem's] name. You'll be dropping the charges. We're coming uptown with 20-oz. Mountain Dew bottles full of gas and charcoal lighting fluid, and matches." Where the attack would take place is unclear, though the city's legal offices are a likely target. "But we don't know for sure" Deputy Mayor Mike Greiner told reporters. "It can be taken in some respect as a threat against the city as a whole." Eminem is due to appear in court again on 11th July.

Dr. Dre remixing D'Angelo song |
| Posted Tuesday, June 13, 2000 by Chris |
This is from MTV.com.
Consider it a match made in chart heaven.
Rarely-clad R&B crooner D'Angelo (whose "Voodoo" debuted at number one earlier this year) is hooking up with Dr. Dre (whose list of chart accomplishments cannot be contained by mere parentheses) for a remix of D'Angelo's "Chicken Grease."
"We actually talked about touring together," D'Angelo told MTV News while in Los Angeles for the 2000 MTV Movie Awards. "I don't know, though. I think we're just gonna do our own thing."
The chart-topper went on to say that DJ Premier is also working on a remix of his "Devil's Pie" that should also surface soon.
While it's not known when those remixes will become available, it is known that D'Angelo himself will surface on July 29 when his U.S. tour kicks off in Chicago. Here's where to catch him (as always, tour dates are subject to change):
- 7/29 - Chicago, IL @ Chicago Theater
- 8/1 - Denver, CO @ Paramount
- 8/3 - Phoenix, AZ @ Celebrity Theater
- 8/4 - Los Angeles, CA @ Greek Theater

Eminem sued |
| Posted Saturday, June 10, 2000 by Jon |
Just when you can't turn on the radio or go to a club without hearing The Real Slim Shady, and you think Em's publicity can't get any higher, he hits the news for the third time this week.
He's being sued by John Guerra, the man he attacked in the June 4th incident (see Eminem Arrested), from which stemmed felony charges. I guess Mr. Guerra saw his opportunity to make a buck and help secure his future. I'm sure Eminem will make up the difference plus profit when he writes about it on his next LP. |

Eminem facing prison time |
| Posted Thursday, June 8, 2000 by Jon |
Details in the arrest of Eminem (see Eminem Arrested) have been released. Apparently Eminem showed up at the Hot Rocks Cafe because his wife was there with another man, John Guerra. When Em saw his wife kissing this guy, he pulled out a gun and hit the guy over the head with it. The gun was later found to be unloaded. Eminem pleaded not guilty and was released on $100,000 bail.
Em also faces charges which occured Saturday, June 3, outside a Mickey Shorr audio electronics store in Royal Oak, Michigan between himself and Insane Clown Posse member, Douglas Dial. He's being charged with two additional gun charges, and could face 5 years inprisonment on top of the sentence from the case above.
The battle between Eminem and Insane Clown Posse has been going on for some time, on Eminem's latest CD, The Marshall Mathers LP, Eminem disses them on the title track.
Plus I was put here to put fear in faggots who spray Faygo Root Beer and call themselves "Clowns" cause they look queer Faggot2Dope and Silent Gay Claimin Detroit, when y'all live twenty miles away And I don't wrestle, I'll knock you fuckin faggots the fuck out Ask 'em about the club they was at when they snuck out after they ducked out the back when they saw us and bugged out Ducked down and got paintballs shot at they truck, blaow! The Marshall Mathers LP held on to number 1 this week selling 794,000 units, beating out fellow Detroiter Kid Rock. |

Eminem Arrested |
| Posted Monday, June 5, 2000 by Jon |
I don't know who exactly are Eminem's publicity/advertising advisors, but they deserve more credit than can possibly be given. Sunday morning, following the week in which Eminem sold 1.76 copies of his new album, he is in the news, arrested outside the Hot Rocks venue in his hometown of Detroit. He has since been released on bail.
I've heard a few rumors on the incident that took place, but nothing has yet been confirmed by official police reports. It's possible that people got excited when Eminem showed up and a fight broke out, the other possibility is that the fight stemmed from an incident between Eminem and his wife. Four people were arrested in total and it's rumored that there was a gun involved. We'll have more info as soon as it's available. |
