Eminem singles hit the internet
Posted Saturday, April 22, 2000 by Jon
eminem_small.jpg (8532 bytes)Eminem's new album The Marshall Mathers LP is still set for a May 23rd release. Singles were shipped to radio stations last week and due to net leaks have already become available on the internet. A video has been shot for the first single of the album titled The Real Slim Shady, and is going to debut on MTV Monday night at 11:00pm Eastern time and 8:00pm Pacific.   The song is hillarious.  It disses quite a few people including Will Smith, Pamela Anderson, boy bands, Tom Green, and refers to Christina Aguilera giving head.   In the song Our House, he has a mention to Tupac which I thought was kinda funny.

Hey mom, Tupac's on the Jukebox
(So what? He shot 2 cops and raped a little girl while 2 dudes watched)
Nah - Uh, they was trying to frame him
  (You and that Tupac Shakur)
No, that ain't how you say his name mom
Ya so lame you don't know anything
(Yeah I know, you probably go and join in a gang)
Yeah right I'm out where's my fuckin' walkman at
  (Stop cursing at me!)
Shut up Bitch
  (And quit talking black)
Well slam the door and I'm out

You can listen and view lyrics to a few songs from the LP, including The Real Slim Shady, Our House, and Kim at Eminem2000.com.

Shooting at Money B's release party
Posted Friday, April 21, 2000 by Chris
This is from MTV.com:

A fatal shooting took place early Thursday morning outside a San Francisco club where Digital Undergound member Money B was celebrating the release of his new album, according to local radio station KCBS-AM.

A black male in his mid-30s was shot around 2 a.m. outside The Glas Kat Supper Club. He reportedly died at San Francisco General Hospital a short time later.

San Francisco Police confirmed to MTV News that they are questioning a number of witnesses and said they had made no arrests at press time.

The KCBS report cites witnesses who say a scuffle broke out after one person began banging on an S.U.V. that Money B and his entourage were leaving the party in. KCBS also reports that police believe the fatal shots were fired by someone inside the rapper's vehicle. Police could not confirm that information to MTV News at press time.

Dr. Dre sued by Lucasfilm
Posted Thursday, April 20, 2000 by Chris
This is from MTV.com:

One day after taking legal aim at Napster, Dr. Dre is now the target of a high-profile legal salvo himself.

George Lucas' Lucasfilm, Ltd. production company is suing Dre and charging the hip-hop impresario with various copyright and trademark wrongdoings.

Lucasfilm's suit, which seeks unspecified damages, hinges on Dre's use of something called the "THX Deep Note," a sound trademarked by Lucas' company. According to Lucasfilm, the sound is the first ever to be trademarked; it should be familiar to moviegoers as the sound that accompanies the THX logo before films screened in theaters with THX sound systems.

It should also be familiar to rap fans as the sound that opens Dre's album Dr. Dre 2001, which is precisely the problem, according to Lucasfilm. The production company claims that Dre used the sound without the company's permission, prompting Lucasfilm to file the suit against the rapper as well as his Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records.

A spokesperson for Dre's lawyer claimed that the rapper had not yet been served with the suit, and a spokesperson for Interscope offered no comment on the case.

The suit comes on the heels of news that Dre had issued a warning to Napster, Inc., giving the music distribution site until Friday to remove all of his tracks from its pool of potential downloads.

More Information on Crazy

As we reported earlier in the month (No Limit signs Crazy, who sounds like Pac), No Limit has signed a rapper by the name of Crazy, who sounds similar to Tupac. I've received a few emails regarding a Makaveli 7 bootleg in the Baltimore area, which apparantly includes songs, by Crazy, posing as Tupac. I don't have any confirmation on that but I hope it's not true. Here's a couple sound clips thanks to CDnow.com

Good old Puffy dissing
Posted Wednesday, April 12, 2000 by Jon
As I reported earlier, Puff Daddy is scheduled to be shooting a movie called "Made". (See Puffy Acts Hardcore) Puffy told MTV News recently: It's a small role, It's not a huge role, so that's the way I'm starting out my acting career. I'm taking small roles, surrounding myself with quality actors with quality material, and it's a comedy, so it's something that you really wouldn't expect to see me in." The movie is about two boxers, who get caught up in an organized crime ring, lead by Puffy. That's a comedy ? The only thing funny would be watching Puffy act, especially trying to act hardcore. He can't act hardcore in real life how's he going to do it for the TV camera ?

Big Pun debut's at No. 3
Posted Wednesday, April 12, 2000 by Jon
bigpun.jpg (21503 bytes)Big Pun debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Charts, with his new album, Yeeeah Baby.  This ranking is extremely high when you take into consideration that N' Synch and Santana are No. 1 and 2.  The album sold 185,000 copies in it's first week. I'm happy to see the album doing well. It's unfortunate that his release party ended when a fight broke out. That's real disrespectful. RIP

The Outlawz' Lawsuit
Posted Wednesday, April 5, 2000 by Chris
This is from CDNow.com:

The rap group the Outlawz, best known for their work with the late Tupac Shakur, have filed a $4.5 million lawsuit against Death Row Records, the label's incarcerated chief Marion "Suge" Knight, its distributor Interscope Records, Suge Knight Films, and Suge Publishing.

The suit, filed Tuesday (April 4) in Los Angeles Superior Court, cites 11 complaints, including breach of contract, unfair business practices, intentional interference with prospective economic advantages, racketeering, and others. The Outlawz, which signed with Death Row in March 1997 and delivered their first master recordings in January 1998, claim that, "Death Row refused to release said master recordings in retaliation for the Outlawz' refusal to enter into a separate agreement granting to Suge Publishing a publishing interest in the compositions contained in the masters delivered to Death Row."

In July 1998, the group claims that because the label didn't release the recording or give them notice of extending the term of their recording contract that their contract expired on approximately May 6, 1999. The label then released 2Pac + Outlawz' Still I Rise Dec. 21, 1999, while the Outlawz maintain that they were no longer signed to the label. The album debuted at No. 7 on The Billboard 200.

"Beginning prior to the release of Still I Rise and continuing to the present," reads the suit, in part, "Death Row and Knight have falsely asserted to third parties, including representatives of Interscope, that the Outlawz remain obligated under the Recording Agreement; and Death Row and Knight have otherwise interfered with a) the Outlawz' career in the entertainment industry and the value of their trademark, b) the marketing and exploitation of the Still I Rise record, and c) the agreement between the Outlawz and the Estate of Tupac Shakur and Interscope."

The group, which began writing songs with Shakur in 1994 until the rapper's death in 1996, claims that Death Row and Knight had instructed Interscope not to include the Outlawz (formerly known as Dramacydal and Outlaw Immortalz) in any promotion for the album, including videos, radio promotion, street marketing, and press; and that they included their performance in the video Death Row Uncut for Knight Films without any license, authorization, or compensation.

Attorneys for the group sent a cease and desist letter to Death Row and Interscope on Feb. 23 of this year asking them to stop asserting that the group is still signed to the label; to cease interfering with the marketing of Still I Rise; to cease selling the Death Row Uncut video unless the appropriate licenses and releases are issued; and to give the group an accounting of their work with Shakur on the 1997's Gang Related and 1996's Supercop soundtracks, and the aforementioned video, released in 1999.

The Outlawz are credited on Gang Related for three tracks with 2Pac ("Staring Through My Rearview," "Made Niggaz," and "Lost Souls") and one with Daz Dillinger ("What's Ya Fantasy?"). They're credited on Supercop again for "Made Niggaz" with 2Pac.

The full complaint is for unfair business practices, violation of the Lanham Act, intentional interference with prospective economic advantage, violation of civil code 3344, quantum meruit, unjust enrichment/implied contract, negligence, declaratory relief, accounting, breach of contract, and violations the Federal RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization) Statute.

No Limit signs Crazy, who sounds like Pac
Posted Tuesday, April 4, 2000 by Jon
crazy.jpg (3694 bytes)"NWA, I really liked them, but my number one idol in the world is 2 Pac" - Crazy

No Limit just signed a rapper by the name of Crazy, who sounds like, and reportedly shows a lot of emotion in his songs like Pac. Maybe now Master P can just say he's biting this guys style. The rapper released his first album in 1992 called CrazyMania. With such a well thought-out, profound title, I can't believe the album didn't blow up. He had decent underground success with his albums I Shed Tears For The World (1998) and Please Don't Kill Me (1999). You can check out his discography at Cdnow.com, they got some sound samples but I couldn't seem to get their server to connect.
