Pac tributes on TV |
| Posted Thursday, November 30, 2000 by Jon |
| MTV had a Tupac tribute on tonight (yeah, that's M-T-V, no need to think it's a mis-print), I didn't see the show myself but I heard that it was good. BET (which I've heard is now owned by Viacom, the same company that owns MTV, yeah BET is no longer Black owned) is also scheduled to have a tribute show on Rap City on the 30th. |

Update on Em's song Quitter |
| Posted Thursday, November 30, 2000 by Jon |
An update on the song Quitter by Eminem (Em disses Everlast to Hit Em Up beat). Apparently the song was recorded by Eminem and D-12 but they scrapped it. Somehow it was leaked to the internet and that's why the song is incomplete. I wonder if it was purposely leaked to the internet as is and if D-12 actually recorded verses. It seems odd that it would be leaked incomplete. I guess we'll see.
Here's an Em parody called "Dear Marshall". [ Listen ] |

Em disses Everlast to Hit Em Up beat |
| Posted Wednesday, November 29, 2000 by Jon |
Another round of the Eminem vs Everlast bout has taken place with Eminem responding with the song "Quitter" ft D-12. Em raps a couple verses and then stops the beat, he then starts in with the beat from no song other than "Hit Em Up", of course the dis song written by Tupac and the Lawz, probably the greatest dis song of all time. Em and D-12 use the same rhyming scheme with the lyrics twisted. We've been unable to find a complete audio, but when we do we will repost the song, for now you can listen to the first 4:27.

Deathrow offers Last Meal on mp3 |

They've put up the tracklisting to the album The Last Meal on the front page of their site DeathrowRecords2000 offering the chance to make a comparison between The Last Meal and Dead Man Walking. I wonder if this will bring about yet another mp3 related law suit. |

Audio of Outlawz dis at Battle Blaze |
| Posted Wednesday, November 29, 2000 by Jon |
Here's the audio of the dis the Outlawz received at Battle Blaze 2000. It came in a battle between Eyedea vs R.K. when RK said "your career will end just like the outlawz did when 2pac died".
The audio is really funny cause RK is wack. It's funny that the Outlawz would get dissed about their career by somebody without a career or a future. The crowd was booing all through his rap and then Eyedea seriously ripped him. "look at him trying to mock me/ knowing that he jocks me/you couldn't kick dope lyrics with karate" ... "I grab the mic and str8 be a rap enhancer/this cat wants to be my f*cking backup dancer"

The Source article |
| Posted Tuesday, November 28, 2000 by Chris |
Here's an article from the latest issue of The Source about The Rose That Grew From Concrete, Volume I.
In stores now, is a new album that celebrates the life and works of Tupac Shakur, titled The Rose That Grew From Concrete, Volume I. The CD includes re-workings of 'Pac songs, recorded by the likes of Mos Def, Tre from The Pharcyde, Q-Tip, The Outlawz, actor Danny Glover, and Black Panther Geronimo Pratt.
Afeni Shakur, Tupac's beloved mother, supervised the recording of the album and made sure that the integrity of her late son's music was kept intact. One particular song that she worked closely on was Mos Def's version of "Can U C The Pride In The Panther." Two versions of the song appear on The Rose, a female version and one for the male perspective. Ms. Shakur, a former Black Panther herself, recalled that she gave Mos a little coaching to help him properly represent the song and what it stands for.
"Since I had knowledge of Mos Def being brought up in a Muslim community — and that isn’t much different from the Panther household I asked him to [re-write the song] by remembering what it was like when all the men left your mom," Ms Shakur said. "[I asked him], 'What feelings were felt when all the brothers were gone and your mother was left there to figure out what to do?' Fifteen minutes later, [Mos Def] had written the second version of 'Panther' — and that’s a big deal."
"He was so free inside," Ms Shakur said of Mos Def. "He immediately went in and changed both versions. In the end, they both were so great that we kept both of them."
Tupac's loving mother also commented on the importance of the project as a whole.
"We need for young people who are disillusioned and think life is not worth living [to know that it is]," Afeni said. "I believe deeply in my heart that this work will help somebody. This project is a healing project. In the depths of sorrow and despair, somebody will listen to this and not take their life."
The songs on The Rose actually represent 25 of 71 selected poems from the late Tupac Shakur’s posthumously published book, The Rose That Grew From Concrete, Volume I. Shakur wrote the poems between the ages of 19 to 21 (1989 to 1991), and his mother organized the works into a book that was published in 1999.
The album includes a wide range of influential figures. Rappers Mos Def, Dead Prez, Tre from the Pharcyde, Q-Tip, and the Outlawz grace the album over musical backgrounds ranging from hip-hop, jazz, R&B, African and Native American rhythms, to rock melodies. Also lending their talents to the album are poet Sonia Sanchez; actors Danny Glover, Malcolm Jamal Warner, and Jasmine Guy; and musical giants Quincy Jones, Russel Simmons & Reverend Run all serve to broaden the scope of the album.
He may have passed away on September 13, 1996, but Tupac’s spirit will live on in his music.

Vibe review |
| Posted Monday, November 27, 2000 by Chris |
Here's Vibe's review of The Rose That Grew From Concrete.
Unfortunately, this past September marked the fourth year of Tupac Shakur returning to the essence. Since his untimely passing, umpteen Makaveli volumes and posthumous albums have been released, not to mention the overwhelming amount of home videos and unofficial recordings that have surfaced. In contrast, very little attention has been placed on The Rose That Grew From Concrete, a collection of his poems written before his meteoric rise to fame.
Afeni Shakur, Pac's mother, assembles an all-star collective to present some of his most poignant works from his book of poetry, which bears the same title (released last year), through their lips and hearts. Mos Def shines on the male and female versions of "Can U C the Pride in the Panther," on which Pac originally declared, "It's said that every revolutionary act is an act of love." Author Sonia Sanchez's words cut like a knife over the sounds of a stand-up bass on "When Ure Heart Turns Cold," while Jasmine Guy chastises a dead-beat dad on "Tears of a Teenage Mother."
Pac's road dawgs the Outlawz and his godfather Geranimo Ji Jaga lend their vocals as well on "In the Event of My Demise." Meanwhile, lil' homie Mac Mall and Quincy Jones orate the many pitfalls of fame throughout the introspective "Starry Night." The album's highest point is the title track. Aided by an introduction by Shakur, legendary poet Nikki Giovanni metaphorically articulates the awesome accomplishment of a rose's ability to overcome its dire circumstances.
One might wonder if Tupac ever imagined his compositions would be recorded within the musical realms of Reggae & Folk music as done on Red Rat's "And Still I Love You" and Dan Rockett's "Sometimes I Cry," respectively. Nonetheless, these songs speak volumes of the worldly scope Tupac's intriguing writings possess.
In addition, celebrities such as Russell Simmons, Danny Glover, Q-Tip, K-Ci from Jodeci, the cast of "The Lion King" and a host of others add their positive energy to this groundbreaking project. The Rose That Grew From Concrete might not bump as loud in your ride, but it surely will make it easier to appreciate the brilliant mind of Tupac Shakur.

A Huey P. Newton Story |
| Posted Saturday, November 25, 2000 by Jon |
Coming off of the mixed reception of his blunt portrayal of a racist TV industry in the film Bamboozled, director Spike Lee is set to head the filming of another controversial subject. This time, Lee will direct the film version of award-winning play, A Huey P. Newton Story, a chronicle of the life of the late Black Panther co-founder.
The film is based of Roger Guenveur Smith's play, which premiered in New York in February 1997. Smith will star in the adaptation.
A Huey P. Newton Story is scheduled to have its world premiere on BET Movies in May 2001, then PBS and African Heritage Network will follow. Principal photography for the film was shot on November 18.
Newton led a whirlwind life as one of the leaders of the militant Oakland, California-based group, which wanted to empower the black community in America. However, conflicts between Black Panthers and police in the late 1960s and early '70s led to shoot-outs in California, New York, and Chicago. The FBI's targeting of Panther members and inner turmoil led to the eventual disbandment of the Party in the '80s.
After a spending turbulent existence during the eighties with drugs, Newton died on the streets of Oakland in a drug dispute. |

| Posted Saturday, November 11, 2000 by Chris |
| The Outlawz was on Westside Radio tonight. They said they and Pac came up with the whole outlaw thing in Atlanta when Pac was working on Me Against The World and had 13 cases. They was asked about Shyne. They said that they first showed him love, but that he later disrespected them. It was Napoleon who spitted at Shyne at The Source Awards. They was asked about how deep the beef between Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G. was. They said it was real deep, real personal, but it wasn't like Tupac wanted Biggie dead. Bonapartes is the title of Napoleon's upcoming solo album, but it's also the name of a group with the members, Napoleon, Mil, Akwylah, Hellrazor, Ya-Yo. They gave shout outs to various peoples including Lil' Zane, so I'd guess there's no beef between them. Right now, I can't remember what else they talked about. It's 07:42 A.M. where I'm at and I've been awake all night. Hopefully, we'll have the interview up in real audio soon. |

He was asked about Fatal, he said he's in prison right now, but will be released next month. He was asked what he thought about Snoop Dogg working with Tupac's enemies, all he said was that Snoop's a grown man. He was asked about Eminem, he said that they ain't tripping about Eminem. Someone asked if Big Syke and Suga Free got beef, he said they didn't and he was about to record a song with Suga Free. They also said O.G. (Outlaw Gear) is coming out real soon. |

Glo talks about Tupac |
| Posted Friday, November 10, 2000 by Chris |
Glo's Tupac's aunt, Kastro's mother and Afeni Shakur's sister. Here's what she had to say about Tupac in an interview with 2PACLegacy.com.
"Growing up Tupac was always commanded attention. He would organize family plays and performances. He also choose the lead role and assigned his cousins and friends to their roles. We never knew how or when, but I always knew Pac would have a huge impact on this world. When Pac went to jail it was one of the worst periods in my life. I would visit him to keep his spirits high and discuss the future with him. I knew eventually he would be cleared of the false charges against him. One thing people might not know is that Tupac likes all types of music. His music taste varied from country to pop. The best things his fans can do to preserve Pac's memory is to strive to be the best at whatever they pursue in life!"

LeftEye talks about Tupac |
| Posted Friday, November 10, 2000 by Chris |
Left Eye took time out from recording her solo debut album to speak to us about how she first met Tupac and the ten year plan they devised together.
2PACLegacy.com: How did you first meet Tupac?
LeftEye: Very strange way we met, I was watching a television program, I believe it was back in 1991 it was December and he was ragging on about Arsenio Hall, he captured my full attention and I wanted to meet him very bad, so less than a week from that day an artist that I knew came to my house, um, he use to airbrush and he airbrushed a picture of me on a t-shirt and he was down at the AU Center in Atlanta, Georgia selling the t-shirt and Tupac was standing across the street from him so Tupac walked over to him and said do you know that girl, you know I was on the picture with the big green hat on, you know this is when ain't to proud to beg came out, so the artist said as a matter of fact I do know her, and so Tupac gave the artist his phone number to give to me so then the artist came to my house and said you'll never guess who I ran into, I said who, Tupac he saw your shirt and wanted to know if I knew you blah, blah, blah, I was like, wow amazing, I just wanted to meet him you know so, um, we met over the phone and that's basically... We just had a long distance relationship, we talked alot you know he was in California at the time and I was living in Atlanta.
How often did you guys hang out?
Not very often at all, I mean, three times, I don't even consider that hanging out hanging out.
What are some of your favorite Tupac songs?
Uh, let's see, "I Wonder If Heaven Got A Ghetto," uh oh, goodness it's so many of them, some of the earlier ones are the ones I love the most, yeah, "Keep Ya Head Up," that's the one I wanted to redo when Afeni was working on a project where different artist were gonna redo some of his songs, "Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z..." I love that one, uh, I like "I Ain't Mad At Cha," All Eyez... No, that's not the name of a song is it? Yeah, yeah, that's the first song on that CD, All Eyez On Me, what's the name of where he says um, "I know you see me, can you feel me?" "Picture Me Rollin'" those are mine, it's endless!
There was talk that there was a 10 year plan or a 5 year plan tell us how it came about.
Well, let's see, okay, shortly after Tupac and I met he inspired me to paint a pic of him so I painted it with oil, oil paint and on the back of the picture I cant even remember what it said I know I started it let's play a game the game was I was to list ten goals that I wish to have had accomplished in 10 years and when he got the picture he was suppose to put it in a frame and ten years from that day we were suppose to crack the frame lift the pic on the back and for how many goals had come true is for how many millions of dollars we were gonna auction the pic for and give the money to a charity.
When was the last time you spoke to or saw Tupac alive?
The last time I saw him alive was about two months before he passed on, it was in California.
What is your advice to all aspiring singers, actors, entertainers, young people out there who want to go into the entertainment industry? What advice would you have for them?
[Laughs] Wow, okay, okay... How can I make this simple, my advice to all singers, entertainers, aspiring entertainers, who want to get into the business is, uh... Life is what you make it, it's really that simple I mean if that's what you truly desire and what you truly put your heart into then it should manifest for you as long as you are not distracted and don't miss those opportunities, um, from all the everyday distractions that we encounter, um, I don't know it's... It's really about... Um, I don't know, um, you can cut it.

Vanilla Ice is back |

Vanilla Ice is back in the works with an album titled Skabz. He will have appearances by the Insane Clown Posse, LA Darkman and Chuck D and Professor Griff. Vanilla said that Lenny Kravitz is also on the album. According to MTV news, Lenny denies it.
Apparently he's dissing Eminem on the album, whiteboy vs whiteboy, which might explain why Insane Clown Posse is on the album. |
